A Treadmill Desk Enables You To Move More & Lose Weight While You Work

It’s a fact that most of us don’t get enough exercise, particularly those of us who have desk jobs.

One doctor has come up with a revolutionary new way to get your work done and exercise at the same time.

It’s called the treadmill desk!

Lose 57 Lbs A Year!

treadmill-desk-by-misterbisson.jpgDr. James Levine of the Mayo clinic came up with this solution to our to sedentary lifestyle.

His idea is that you can slowly walk on a treadmill while you work on a desk that is built around the treadmill.

It’s estimated that you could lose 57 pounds in a year using the treadmill desk.

It’s actually pretty ingenious when you think about it — especially since many of us (self included) gripe about having to stop working long enough to go and exercise. I fully admit to being bound to my desk. As a full-time writer, I spend hours at a time tapping away on my keyboard, writing articles, books and other types of web content as well.

The best way to lose weight fast is clearly to start moving more!

Treadmill Desks Are Catching On

One company in Minneapolis has actually provided treadmill desks to some of its employees.

Terri Krivosha works for that company and says that she logs 3 miles a day just working at her treadmill desk. According to her, it is easier to walk at her desk and continue to work than it is to take the time to go to an aerobics class.

The idea seems to be a welcome one, as there are many people who after being inspired by seeing Dr. Levine’s treadmill desk are creating their own treadmill desks.

Benefits Of Treadmill Desks

Believe it or not, there are other benefits to having a treadmill desk than just losing weight.

Many who use the desks say that their productivity has increased, as has their concentration. Both of these are a big deal in my estimation, since they are 2 of the main things that office workers struggle with.

Other benefits include reduced stress, and a reduction in back problems and insomnia.

Disadvantages Of Treadmill Desks

One of these is that not everyone is coordinated enough to work and walk at the same time. It sounds silly, but if you have a hard time doing 2 things at once (such as patting your head and rubbing your belly, for example), then working and walking may be hard for you.

Another disadvantage is the fact that a treadmill desk can take up quite a bit of space. If you are short on space, this could be an issue for you.

Also, not everyone is going to be sold on the idea. While a treadmill desk may seem like a good idea and a great way to get your exercise in, not everyone is going to want to use one. Just as with those who know exercise is good for them but don’t exercise, there are going to be those who choose to continue to sit and work rather than exercise and work at the same time.

A final disadvantage is the cost. The treadmill desk that Dr. Levine came up with costs $4,000. Ouch!

How To Make Your Own Treadmill Desk

When you think about it, it wouldn’t really be that hard to make your own treadmill desk.

You just need a table that can be pulled up to the treadmill and you’re off! You can walk all day if you want to.

These videos provide tips for building a treadmill desk yourself:

Only time will tell if treadmill desks become the wave of the future, or are just a fad that will fade away over time.

I personally think it’s a great idea, but I think I may be one of those people that is not coordinated enough to actually walk and work at the same time!
