Should You Let A Chiropractor Crack Your Neck?
As I've written here before, I go to a chiropractor regularly. It started as treatment for carpal tunnel, shoulder, and neck pain.
After monthly visits over the course of 7 months or so, I tried weaning myself off of chiropractor visits. However, largely due to the fact that I spend upwards of 13 hours a day at a computer, the pain managed to creep back into my neck and shoulders again.
So now I go in for a chiropractic adjustment "as needed", which is about every other month.
A Chiropractor Can Cure Whatever Ails You
There are certainly a number of benefits to having a chiropractor put your body back in alignment through a series of adjustments called "spinal manipulations".
However, there's also a serious warning about neck adjustments that I just learned about.
Following is some important advice before letting a chiropractor crack your neck, including some of the risks associated with chiropractic neck adjustments...
Please, Crack My Neck... Please?!
My favorite "adjustment" up until now has been what I refer to as "the neck crack" or "that one that twists your neck."
Though slightly nervous before I had it done the first time (in fact, I was highly skeptical of the entire chiropractic field initially!), I have actually begged my chiropractor for that particular adjustment on numerous occasions since.
My chiropractor won't do it all the time though. If he's not sensing tension in the areas which that particular type of neck adjustment would relieve, then (much to my regret) he opts for another type of adjustment instead.
How Can You Do That?
Fortunately, I had little or no warning beforehand -- the very first time that this forceful neck adjustment was done on me.
Had he prepped me for it in advance, I probably would have tightened up and been quite nervous.
In fact, I don't actually recall, but I might have advised him on that first visit: "If you're going to do that neck-twist thing, I don't want to know about it ahead of time... just do it."
I know that was my intention anyway -- because I so desperately needed relief. And up to that point, I had tried everything else under the sun. I was mentally ready to try the neck adjustment, (in fact, that's all I thought chiropractors did at the time). And I just didn't want to be given an opportunity to back out.
It's Not That Big A Deal, Really
My mom went to a chiropractor once (for migraines I think), and she refused to let him do the neck adjustment on her. Instead, her chiropractor performed something like 150 tiny taps in succession at the nape of her neck -- which he said would serve the same purpose. I don't get it, but she said it worked just fine.
I think that anyone who worries about this particular type of chiropractic adjustment for the sole purpose of fearing the unknown itself should just lighten up and relax... and enjoy the relief you get afterwards! I say that from one who's been there, done that.
The best part is: It literally happens in a millisecond! Plus, it feels so refreshing when it's done -- like you have full range of motion in your neck again.
But Wait, There's More!
That said, I I have a chiropractic visit scheduled for tomorrow, and I have to admit I'm feeling some slight reservation to getting the "neck twist" done this time.
Why? Because I was reading through my August issue of Consumer Reports, and I find this:
A University of California, San Francisco, study of stroke victims published in 2003 found that chiropractic manipulation of the neck significantly increased the risk of stroke by causing the lining of a neck artery to break off and block blood flow to the brain. Other studies have echoed that concern.
Woah!... I've always trusted and respected whatever Consumer Reports has to say, but now it's hitting close to home. And whether or not I choose to heed their warning could ultimately affect whether I live or die.
Okay, maybe that's a bit exaggerated, but I bet Lana Dale Lewis' family doesn't think so. You see, she's a lady who died after experiencing 2 strokes immediately after receiving a chiropractic neck adjustment.
View several videos about the controversial neck adjustment which was believed to be behind this woman's untimely death. (See the complete story, with videos to the right. It is the 2nd video which actually shows a chiropractor performing this controversial neck adjustment.)
She's not alone.
In fact, there have been a number of patients who have suffered a stroke -- either in the chiropractors office, or days later. Some have died.
Chiropractic Neck Adjustments Remain Controversial
Adding fuel to the fire...
- Here's a collection of news reports and studies warning of the dangers associated with neck adjustments.
- And, here's a report on what they're calling Chiropractic's Dirty Secret: Neck Manipulation and Strokes.
- Preston Long, Ph.D., a Diplomate with the American Board of Forensic Examiners who acts as their chief liaison officer to the state of Arizona points out all the ways that stroke and spinal manipulation go hand in hand.
The preponderance of the scientific literature supports a direct cause-and-effect mechanism between spinal manipulation and stroke. The therapeutic benefit of spinal manipulation in acute neck pain remains unproven. Source
Chiropractic Treatment Itself Is Safe
Now, for the other side of the story...
- Here's a summary of the reasons that patients should not fear the chiropractic neck adjustment.
- Here are the actual results of that UC-San Francisco study that Consumer Reports referred to.
- And for the results of that study summarized in layman's terms, check here.
Incidence of stroke from all causes is only 10 per 100,000, so we're not talking about large numbers of victims. But rare incidences do happen, and physicians and patients should be aware of spinal manipulation therapy as a rare but potentially causal factor in stroke. Source
Will You Continue To Get Neck Adjustments?
I probably will continue getting my neck cracked (my term, not theirs) by a chiropractor.
I take comfort in knowing that chiropractors are licensed in all states. They must receive constant training throughout their career and stay abreast of all the latest news and studies.
They know the rules. Why would any well-intentioned chiropractor want to risk a malpractice suit unless he truly felt that his actions were helping his patients?
If I have come to trust a particular chiropractor on other issues as they pertain to my health and well-being, then I will trust him on this as well.
Plus, in reality, there are risks to everything in life. It is far riskier for me to drive to the chiropractor than it is to have my neck cracked by one!
UPDATE 8/11/05: I had my visit with the chiropractor today, and I started the appointment by asking for his take on this whole issue.
He was very knowledgeable about it, and offered a few interesting comparisons:
1. You are 6 times more likely to be struck by lightning.
2. It's 8 times riskier getting your hair washed at the beauty shop (...where you're leaning back with your neck over that scooped-out portion of the sink).
He also said that there are other ways to achieve the same thing at a chiropractor's office, if one does in fact have tension or misalignment in the neck area.
For example, he said "the drops" are just as effective. This is where you're lying on your stomach, and as he applies a certain amount of quick and forceful pressure to a key area of your neck, the headrest gives way (ever so slightly).
I don't mind that particular method at all, but it doesn't seem as effective, simply because I don't feel the "wow!" factor. In fact, the "forceful pressure" is hardly even noticed at all.
In light of our conversation, he asked for my preference should any neck adjustment be necessary after his initial examination today. I said I really wanted the neck twist, because I always felt much better immediately afterward, but I just didn't want to know ahead of time that it was coming -- simply because I feel like I'm more likely to tense up a bit, rather than remain completely relaxed. I love it, and I don't fear it, but there's something about it that gets the endorphins charged in your brain right before it happens.
He thought since I usually have the "twist" done (again, my word not his), he'd do the "drops" for a change -- just so I'd have something to compare it to. The verdict: I'm going back to the twist -- it's more immediate, and feels like it's really working.
So, I'm sticking with my initial feelings on this matter... Everything in life is risky -- this is just another of those things. In reality the amount of risk here is negligible, compared to so many other things we do on a daily basis. That's just my $.02.
There is a risk associated with anything we do, including walking across a busy intersection. If chiropractic was that dangerous than I would believe that there malpractice would be much higher. Right now the avg. malpractice cost for the year is around $1500 a year. You have more of a risk getting into a car accident!!!
There are more risks associated with taking NSAIDS. Bottom line educate yourself and don't believe the hype!!
Went to a chiropractor on and off for about a year for neck pain. Always got the neck twisted not knowing there was any risk of stroke involved. My neck now constantly cracks and really doesn't feel much better than when I started getting the adjustments. As a young adult who is in fairly good shape, it is extremely disheartening to think of the risks I have caused for myself. All, because I was naive enough to trust a chiropractor with my neck.
If anyone stumbles upon this page considering chiropractic care for their neck, please don't let them touch your neck. Look online, and fairly easily you will find the truth on this absurd practice.
First, I am so very sorry about your mother. I am 44 years old and 3 years ago I had a stroke as a result of having my neck "cracked". I am very fortunate that I sit here today and am able to tell it about it personally. I will never go see a chiropractor again and I don't ever encourage anyone else to do so. It may not happen to you but I certainly didn't think it could happen to me either. People need to be made aware of this.
I just went to see a chiropractor after my massage therapist suggested that it would be good for me. I have this pain that appeared after a trip and nobody (including a physio) knew how to fix it. The chiropractor said it was ridiculopathy and immediately applied pressure on that are plus on my neck. It feels really good. Also, he did the crack on my neck and body. Let me tell you, it's very quick and a split second. I feel very refreshed after going there for 15 minutes. My treatment will have to last 1 month, 3 times per week. I have nothing to lose since my family doctor wasn't able to figure out what is the problem and my physio and massage therapist can't fix it. I am still waiting for my MRI to come at the end of the year.
Recently bought a Teeter inversion table. With daily use, it really helps the low back and even the neck some. It's a "stretch" that become addictive.
I am a PT and refers patients to chiropractors. There's no single health professional who can treat all conditions, if your PT or chiro says so, RUN!!!
I am 45 years old and have had chiropractic adjustments off and on through out my life as needed. They have always incorporated the neck twist and have always helped my problem. I am commenting here because I believe most of the comments left here are from disgruntled patients.....why would a happy patient even be investigationg this site? I am because my sister thought it was her duty to warn me of the inherent risks. I thank her for her concerns but knowingly will continue using what works for me. My chances of being killed in a car wreck on the way to the chiropractor are higher than from the chiropractor. If I do have a stroke following an adjustment, I have asked my family not to sue my doctor. I have chosen my doctors and procedures and realize that walking out my door each morning is risky business...we all will go someday...someway!
I've had some neck relief from chiropractic, but actually got much better results with ONE visit to a physical therapist. She taught me some stretch exercises which are more long term in their benefit.
I have had terrible pain for 11 days after going to a chiropractor, please think twice before you go it may save your life or save you from pain
I have had nothing but positive experiences when chiropractors. Some are better than others, and I'm sure there's a few quacks out there, just as there are with regular MD's and dentists. The key is getting a reputable one. That's done by asking people you know who they go to or would recommend.
My current chiropractor is one I've been seeing for about 16 years. I only go when I feel I need an adjustment. I love the neck crack because I get such a rush of blood and relief of tension afterwards! I would be concerned about getting it if you're going to tense up during it. You gotta relax and trust that he knows what he is doing.
You're always going to hear stories that scare you...you just gotta use your judgement! I read a lot of horror stories about women getting tubals and then having all kinds of problems afterwards. Reading those stories made me a little scared, but I went through with it and guess what?...everything was fine. No problems.
Use your brains, people and don't believe everything you read. The media loves hype.
My neck cracks at least 20 times a day, and that is without me doing any forceful stretch, just looking slightly to the side can make it crack, and it is one hell of a loud crack also.
I would be very aware of going to a chiropractor, very aware..
I used to be an Athelete, a lot of excersize, and muscles joints and all in good shape. one day i had been working for many hours straight learning over a table looking at TV screens for defects. I got home this day, went to wash my face with some jucy cold water, tried to stand back up and could not. went to doc, he told me 3 weeks in bed (NOT and option) but he told me that he can not advise me to see a chiropractor, but I shod consider it lol.
So off I went to the chiropractor. I had never in my life had a cracking joint, not any!!. well this chiropractor crasked every bone in my body i think, some that i never even knew existed, even my ears ?? HOW do ears crack ?, anyhow he cured me, but the next morning, i wake up, every part of me hurts like hell, so so tight, I help my fingers togeather and they cracked, I moved head to left it cracked so bad I yelped.
Today, every joint that the chiropractor cracked, cracks, and yes even the ears. if i do not crack them, especially the sole of my foot, toes and most painful ankles, I suffer so much pain that I can not even walk until I have. once I have I am totally relieved for a few hours. This was 10 years ago i saw that chiropractor. Today I am on more pain than I can wish for, and doctors say it is not Arthritis, they say i just crack now.
so beware of these “so called†chiropractors, maybe this is why medicine does not recognize them as genuine care yet. I very much regret visiting one, and I guess I will for the rest of my life!
be careful!
Now I am scared after reading all these comments and information online about the risk of neck manipulation. I have been to this chiropractic several times for jaw joint pain, and for some reason he adjusted my neck. I was freaking about the crack sound but nothing bad happened afterward. I just had one done again 5 hours ago today, now I am worried about what will happen. I will ask not to get neck cracked next time, but can anybody tell me if I should worry now and what symptoms to look out for since I just got neck manipulation today?
Hi Everybody. I can say only good things about chiropractors. I had a very bad fall at 10.I raised my shoulders up to reduce the innicial pain. My neck was misaligned for 20 years. Nature tried to help by building masses around it and turned my shoulders into two big pieces of stone with cronic pain in the neck and many symptomes including the feeling vomiting everytime I tried to look up or down. Doctors in their traditional way did not even want to opperate and even told me to stay away from chiropractors.Do they have my pain? NO!!! My ultimate resource then was the latter and I am happy I did. The doctor ought to sit and explain to you about your problem and how chiropractors can help. He explain how the body has made it's way to work around an affected area to be able to keep on functioning. The affectted area that was misaligned! All there is to be build is more misalignment and by bringing the cervical bone over at its original place to release the tension on the trapped nerves will take some 3 treatments with interval of 1 month each to let the tissue(Nature) adjust itself around the better stage, one step at a time and that it will be painfull. My injury was severe but that last day treatment I will never forget. I could kiss this Doctor Koekoek in Holland from head to toe. After 20 years and the 2 months of severe pain which I only could lay down that was part of the treatment too. I am a gratefull and new person and I didnot stay there I have designed a special divice to help to keep the cervical curve aligned and made some astonished dicovery and am in the proces of patenting my find. This will help a lot of people in a very easy way to overcome cronic neckpain like I use to have and enjoy the ride of life without pain.

Get to a neurologist immediately - neck manipulation can cause arterial tears, blood clots and at some time in the future that clot or part of that clot may be dislodged and ultimately cause a stroke.
The chiropractor manipulated your neck to correct a subluxation and release what the chiropractic community calls the "innate intelligence" of the body....this supposed subluxation (once corrected) will allow the bodies innate intelligence to correct your infertility problems.
This, of course, is totally bunk....but that's the chiropractic explanation for why your neck was cracked to treat infertility!
I went to a chiropractor for the first time because of low back pain. On review of the xrays, there were "irregularities" all along the spine. When I came for first treatment, the doctor had me on my stomach and pressed on spots on the spine, then I was on my side and he moved my leg towards my head. Then he had me on my back and to my surprise cracked my neck. I returned for two more treatments but I asked that he not touch my neck. I began to have a lot of creaking in my neck and also pain behind the left ear. After a month I visited the chiropractor again to ask him about the condition of my neck. He said it was normal to have the creaking because the neck bones were loosened by the cracking and the treatment was not finished. I had no treatment that day and I do not propose to.
I had no neck pain when I first visited. I don't know why he cracked my neck. He did not tell me and he did not ask me. Then he says the creaking is now normal. It may or may not go away. I came because of low back pain and left with neck pain.
Adjustments are not as safe as chiropractors make them out to be.
I went to a chiropractor because I read that it can be beneficial for infertility. For some reason she adjusted my neck, and after four or five neck adjustments that took place over several weeks, I started having headaches and a strange twinge of discomfort/pain running up the back of my head with certain movements. I will never go back for another adjustment! Why was she adjusting my neck for infertility? I'm angry that she created problems for me that didn't exist! And now I'm trying to decide if I should go to some kind of doctor to see if any damage has been done. What kind of doctor is recommended? What kinds of tests can be done? And no, it was not helpful for my infertility.
>Go to an Osteo! They are better!
Why? Their education is shorter.
>I had an MRI and it showed that I was having neurological complications as a result of the neck manipulation. I really trusted my chiro even w/my children. I surely regret it now.
Many people have the same complications even without they never had neck manipulation. So how do you know that is the cause with you when you could have the same problem without neck manipulation too?
Millions of people have strokes and artery broken every year caused by unknown factor and without having any neck manipulation during their lives. If you get a stroke how to tell what is the cause even if you had some manipulative treatment in same day or in same week?
Many pills and medical treatments cause much more strokes and even deaths than neck manipulation has ever caused. But many patients have received a great relief for their pains by it. I am one of them. But it took a long time to find a good therapist with enough skills.
My mother Beverly had a massive stroke on 4/3/08 about an hour after her chiropractic adjustment. Her carotid artery dissected on her right side of her neck. She passed away on 4/8/08 due to the massive size of the stoke and brain swelling until she was ultimately brain dead. My mother’s death certificate is certified by a medical examiner and states the cause of death was an accident from a stroke caused by chiropractor neck manipulation. My mother, sister, and I have grown up going to the chiropractor and never once heard of this risk until now. We only wish to get awareness out about this, so that another family does not have to go through this. We are devastated over our loss. She was only 59 years old and was in pristine heath. As for the lighning statistic, I guess her chance of having a stroke from chiropractor neck manipulation was higher than that of her getting hit by lightning.
We are not saying if you go to a chiropractor you WILL have a stroke, and even though it is rare, it is a proven risk. And it is a risk that most chiropractor offices do NOT disclose about. Our mission is to get people to be aware of this risk and we want chiropractor offices be required to disclose of the risk. Just like there are disclosures on other things, for example: drinking alcohol MAY cause birth defects; taking a medication MAY cause drowsiness; etc.
My mom lived her entire life helping God’s creatures whether it was a person, an animal, or a plant. Her life dedicated of giving to others continued on, even during her passing as she strongly desired to be an organ donor. God granted her last request to her and she is now a true hero. She has given the ultimate gift by becoming and organ donor and continuing to give life to others with hers. Her lungs went to a 17 year old girl in Canada, her liver got placed, and in addition her skin and bone probably will help up to 50 people. Her other organs went to research which in the end will help save lives also.
I know couple of hundreds of people who have been in neck manipulation and they all said it is a relief. None of them have had any problems. Most of them have received it more than once and most of them will go again when necessary because they know it is the best help.
Many athletes use it. Even many doctors use it. It has helped many.
Then I had two young friends who died mysteriously (broken blood vain in brain) without having any neck manipulation. Other was my 16yrs old cousine. So in my experience neck manipulation is very safe and very good treatment for some neck problems. And people die and if they die after neck manipulation, it might have nothing to do with manipulation because thousands of people just die even without it. How to tell what was the real reason?
I have suffered terrible migraines for over 20 years and have been disabled for over 10. So far the medical profession has had my top right cervical rib removed (TOS), nerves burned in my facet joints (Rhizotomy - causing acute neuralgia for over 6 months) and despite having been to several of the best "pain" clinics in the country and even been inpatient for up to a month twice, all to no avail. The very best I have felt was after seeing a Physical Therapist who did postural re-training and refered me to a VERY SPECIAL chiropractor, specifically for a neck adjustment. Between the two excellent practioners, I was able to go from being on daily narcotics as well as carrying a note from my doctor authorizing up to SIX shots of morphine per month from the local ER/UC and being virtually bed-bound, unable to drive, to not requiring a rescue injection in well over a year and am driving and at least mostly self-sufficient now. The bad news, I moved from Santa Barbara to the Bay area and experienced a bad fall with serious whiplash. Since, my migraines have returned to daily and I can't get a referal to a good chiropractor because of this "stroke" fear. I was even forced to see a Neurologist first to determine if it would be "safe". He told me to "go for it" but had no recommendations! From experience, these highly skilled, extremely intuitive therapists and chiropractors are hard to find, but if you need rehabililitation, it's the only thing that works for me. Period. Regretably, neither of my insurances (yes - I'm VERY fortunate to be dual insured) will cover chiropractic. The drugs, the surgeries, the special centers emphasising everything from meditation to distraction techniques, the $10,000 functioning MRI's done at exclusive teaching facilities, all covered, all to no avail. This Santa Barbara chiropractor would tell me which vertebrae was tilting or rotated and would respectfully ask my body's permission to do the adjustment, all for $50.00! He was so gentle, despite needing more than one neck adjustment, it became no big deal. As I became stronger in therapy I needed fewer and fewer adjustments and was basically going for "fine tuning" in the end, not neck adjustments. For the average person in decent health, maybe the risk of stroke is a valid concern. For a person in my condition, the right neck adjustments can keep me from requiring heavy narcotics and becoming housebound again. These two professionals gave me back my life. I would "risk" it again in a minute, especially if I could find a good referal locally. Any help on this? I live in Mountain View, Ca. Best of luck to all who seek relief.
Go to an Osteo! They are better!
I've been going to the chiropractor for over 15 years. I even had my babies adjusted after birth. Last month I started noticing numbness, pain and intense dizziness after a routine neck adjustment. I had an MRI and it showed that I was having neurological complications as a result of the neck manipulation. I really trusted my chiro even w/my children. I surely regret it now.
I commented back in Sept. I've been going faithfully 2 to 3 times every week for physical therapy and chiro neck adjustments. I keep trying (and so do the physical therapists & the chiropractors who are very nice and at least compassionate), but I'm still in pain. I have to work, so pain medications are not an option (besides they make me sick).
I had been going to a chiropractor for several years and my family members as well. We liked him very much. However, on 10/8/07, he cracked my neck UNUSUALLY hard. I said to him "did you hear that crunch, he said that is normal.I had so much pain that I went back the next day. He did not touch my neck but only massaged my arm.I know he knew it happened. I believed him that everything would be all right and better the next day. I threw up from the pain for 2 days and endd up in the emergency room. They did an MRI and I had emergency surgery for an "anterior cervical fusion". They removed 2 discs and fused C5-C6-AND C7 vertebrea with rods and screws. I know he did it. How do you prove it. I never went to him for neck pain - just middle of my back.
I went to the chro today for the first time.I insisted no neck cracking I am scared to death of it.
I have cronic neck pain and now have resorted to this as the last extreme...My headaches neckpain is driving me crazy. When insisting on no neck cracking they looked at me I guess people want it but I dont are there other ways to get help on my neck without the cracking?
A Chiropractor I had seen was overzealous one day and over-adjusted my neck. The result was a disc that rammed itself into my spine.
Even though symptoms didn't start to show for over a year, the damage was so significant the neurosurgeon spent over four HOURS in removing this one little disc.
I wish I'd never gone to the chiropractor; doing massage therapy instead.
When I stretch my neck, sometimes I can hear crack noises - I told my regular doctor this and he said, while one has to be careful, such stretching is okay and the cracking won't hurt.
And because of the fused discs, there are some exercises and movements I just cannot do.
I was lucky my situation wasn't any worse.
These days I stick with the masseur and do a lot of arm exercises, which helps with the pain a lot.
I sometimes still get migraines. The neck stretching helps, but I try not to do this often.
Yesterday I did a 5 mile walk; for about 20 hours I felt terrific. Sadly, I can't devote 2 hours each day to do that.
I don't care if they have 4 years or 4 minutes of training. In the end it's all hocus pocus. While the risks are small, if they screw up the risks become rather larger.
Chiropractors go to school for a long time 4 years of college and 4 years of chiropractic school. I trust my chiropractor just as much as my medical doctor.
I've been going to a chiropractor for a little while for stiff neck and sore muscles. I've found it's the only thing that really helps and it just feels so good! I talked to my chiropractor doctor about the risks and they are very small. I think Chiropractor doctors get blamed for them when they don't really cause them other stuff does.
Thanks very much for your response. I am going today for my first chiro visit and I am trying to have a more positive outlook.
mdn -
For what it's worth, I haven't been back to the chiropractor in well over a year now. Not for any particular reason, other than I just don't take the time to go. Oh yea, and since I work from home now and we're self-insured, I don't feel like shelling out the $ for each visit.
That said... I really miss it. I'm at the computer 24/7, and my neck, shoulders, and arms are Sooooo tight and feel "pinched" almost all the time. I also have this carpal tunnel and that darned ganglion cyst that won't leave me alone.
When I was getting chiropractic adjustments regularly -- for nearly 2 years straight -- I ALWAYS felt great. Whenever I'd get a "tight" spot, the treatment almost immediately took the stress & pain away.
I do think chiropractic adjustments are a good thing. They worked wonders for me anyways. And you don't HAVE to have the "neck twist" if you don't want. Chiropractors have other ways of accomplishing the same thing... it just might take 2-3 adjustments, rather than one.
I have been dealing with tendonitis and "mild" carpal tunnel in both arms, elbows, wrists, hands for a year now. I had also experienced neck, shoulder, and back pain on and off. I have been to various doctors & therapists, had cortisone injections, the wrist splints, the elbow brace, the anti-imflammatories, the emg's (2 sets!), blah, blah, blah. The pain and discomfort continued.
When things recently seemed worse, especially the neck pain, I went and started physical therapy again and had neck xrays. Now they say that I need chiropractic adjustments. I'm just so skeptical in general about any of this. It seems like no one really knows. I'm going to try the chiro, but I just don't know.....just wanted to vent. Thanks..I think it helped.
I am practicing Chiropractor.
Like any profession, there are good and bad apples. You have to do your research and find out what kind of techniques the doctor(s) you are seeing have to offer you. If you are unsure of what these different techniques can offer you, you need to do more research before telling people that chiropractic doesn't work and any chiropractor performing any technique will kill you and your loved ones, maybe even your dog. All the numbers on prescription or over the counter drugs vs. chiropractic obviously sends a largely one sided message, with chiropractic winning out. Take my word for it, chiropractic is for people who know what chiropractic is all about, health care more than sick care.
I have been going to a DDC for over 25 years, and have always been happy with the treatment and recommend to others, till now. I now do not agree with having neck adjustments, and will not in the future. A member of my family (young and heathly)just died from a massive stroke due to a neck adjustment. Please think twice before having your neck adjusted. It only takes one time mistake to loose your life.
All of your comments have been very informative. I recently started going to a chiro because of bad back and neck pain. I was very nervous at first and have been putting it off. I don't know why but have always been skeptical of going to a chiro, but I need some relief. Up until now I had no idea there was a risk associated with it. I think that they should have to tell you up front. My reason for going to the chrio is becuase the general practitioner could not do anything for me except prescribe pills to numb the pain.
So far my experience with the chiro has been good. I have only been adjusted twice so far, however, the pain has gone down a little and there is more mobility in my neck. Also, he has an in-house massage therapist that I see as well. I am still a little skeptical of the neck adjustment and will bring that up to him the next time.
Thanks to everyone who has posted a comment.
It is interesting -- most people who speak out against chiropractic care would have no problem going to their general practitioner to complain of neck pain and then swallowing all the pills he gives them -- pills whose long term effects are much less known that those of chiropractic care and, strictly by the numbers, much more likely to have negative consequences. What a bunch of brainwashed sheep.
I had a good chat with my chiro. about the stroke issue. He told me that he pays more for car insurance than he does for $2 million worth of malpractice insurance. That says it all if you ask me. Insurance companies know the score.
I have been getting my neck adjusted for the last 2 months and I love it! I admit I was nervous at first, but my doctor is so reassuring that she made it a quick and painless experience for me. I worry more about crossing the street safely than getting my neck adjusted.
i am a chiropractor. Your posts are very informative.
Regarding cervical stroke... when your MD scripts meds there is a greater 'chance' that there maybe a side effect; see Vioxx and Celebrex.
Consider this from the Journal of Rheumatology in 1991, the FDA states that approx 10,000-20,000 deaths a year as a result of NSAID usage. That is Ibuprophen, Acetometaphin, aspirin. The conservative estimate was 7600 deaths a year.
The health field is about money, not your health.
And on topic again, in studies investigating chiropractic adjustments and the effectiveness and safety, they dont tell you who is doing the adjusting. MDs and PTs do not learn how to adjust in the same fashion a chiropractor learns. It is not a weekend class, or a year long of study.
Did you know the birth control pill can increase risk for stroke and clotting problems?
I went to the chiropractor over a year ago and the treatment has caused numbness in my feet and hands, my head feels twisted, my right eye is misaligned and my hearing in my right ear is off. I went to the chiropractor for a achy pain in my neck due to computer use and now my quality of life is greatly impaired. I have had MRA's, MRI's, EMG's and seen physical therapists and message therapists and no one knows what is wrong with me or how to fix the problem. Don't go to a chiropractor.
I was in a bad rearending car accident when I was 17 and started suffering from back neck problems and migraines.
Now, while I think that it's probably not the best idea to have adjustments ALL the time to you neck by a chiropractor, usually if I'm having problems I'll go to my Chiro, have him manipulate my neck and back, and then go to Physiotherapy to work on strengthening the muscles to hold the Chiro adjustment in place so that Chiropractic treatment isn't needed as often (because as good as it feels, it usually makes me a little woozy and sore).
I think a risk is involved with ANY medical treatment. People have died from having simple arm fractures reset because something went wrong and marrow leaked into the bloodstream. You just have to talk to specialists and do what you can to keep your neck and back protected during physical activity so you don't injure it. It's helped me a lot.
I had "HORRIBLE" migraines that were as frequent as twice a week. After 20 visits (75 days), my episodes went down to 1 a month and now I don't have migraines anymore. My insurance company rep recommended the treatment.
I have been seeing a chriopractor for just over one year now.
Before my visits I suffered with terrible headaches almost daily and a numbness in my left arm which would sometimes extend into my head.
In around 3 months I began to feel a huge difference - no it wasn't instantaneous but I certainly felt it after a while.
Now my headaches are very few and far between, my neck pain is 100 times better and improving all the time. The range if movement in my neck has increased and the numbness in my arm has faded.
It's a slow process when things have been building up for a long time but I would never regreat seeing a chiropractor.
For me the benefits of feeling so much better outweight the risks involved.
Please make a note of one thing for some of the facts listed above.
The points about medication errors being a big problem in the US medical system is probably true, just like I can't disprove the odds of getting struck by lightning or having an accident in a salon. What I can say is that these facts have absolutely no relevance to the risks or benefits of chiropractic care.
My personal story here is that I had numbness issues in my hands and wrists .. treated it like carpel tunnel .. didn't respond to standard treatments.
I had MRIs and CT scans done of my brain and neck, and nerve conductance tests done .. nothing found.
I went to a chiropractor hoping to get some resolution. He had me do a series of isometric stretches, icing certain parts of my back, and 2-3 visits per week until it was resolved.
I went for a total of 18 visits, the regimine did not change dramatically at all, each time he would do the neck crack and various other pokes and prods.
After 2 1/2 months, I discontinued the sessions because there was almost no real progress other than my flexability being improved (doing stretches everyday might have something to do with that).
Chiropractors can offer people some relief from certain things, but be very wary when they try and tell you they can fix things like blood pressure and some congenital problems.
For me, the thing that broke the camels back was 1. no real progress on my issues, and 2. During this time I had started on blood pressure medication, after the need for it had passed, my chiropractor concluded that it was a result of his activities, rather than anything more sound (like blood pressure being unrelated to the status of the spine in gross terms).
Craig and JNoann if your stories ARE TRUE, then I truly feel bad for you. But most of these stories are fabricated by anti-chiropractic groups to scare people. I feel these 2 stories are made up. Here's is a fact. When you typically go to the emergency room with back pain, you get pain killers, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e. Vioxx, Bextra, and Naproxen) remember the vioxx problems. A University of Toronto study concluded that prescription drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. They estimated 106,000 deaths per year or 290 deaths per day.
According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the third leading cause of deaths in the US is iatrogenic or ?physician induced.? They report that 250,000 people die each year from iatrogenic causes. This figure is up 236% since 1994. These iatrogenic reactions resulted in 116 million extra physician visits, 77 million extra prescriptions, 17 million emergency department visits, 8 million hospitalizations and 199,000 additional prescription-related deaths. ? Another JAMA article estimates that from 76,000-137,000 people die from adverse drug reactions (ADEs), thus making ADEs somewhere between the 4th and 6th leading cause of death............
With chiropractic the risk stroke from neck manipulation is as high as 1- 1million and as low as 1-5.5 million. In 1999 a review of 116 articles published between 1925 and 1997 found 177 cases of neck injury associated with neck manipulation, at least 60% of which was done by chiropractors [1]..............................
To sum it up, you can take your chances with the drugs and physician induced deaths. Enough people die everyday to fill a jumbo jet (290)!!!!
or
take this risk of going to a chiropractor where 1 person in the WHOLE us on average a YEAR will have a stroke from their chiropractor.

I have been a bit sceptical of Chiropractors my whole life but ended up at one 4 months ago for a slight nervy pain in my lower back. The Chiro tested the strength of my arms and decided that I needed my neck adjusted and performed the "neck twist" on me. Since that one and only adjustment I have had a numb right arm and hand, throbbing inside my head with a blocked right nostril, my neck feels twisted and pain shoots down the right side of it and into my shoulders, But, worst of all I cant surf for more than 10 minutes without getting a chronic head and neck ache. Visit the Chiropractor at your own risk and never let them touch your neck unless it is a last resort emergency and you have tried EVERYTHING else. I fully regret the visit and hope that i can resolve the anger issues that i have toward the chiropractor that did this to me. My life is hell at the moment.I hope this message stops at least one person from getting their neck twisted by a chiropractor. Craig. ps, oh yeah, Ive spent 2000 dollars on medical bills for this injury so far and this is just the beggining
