Fun Facts About Yawning... Guaranteed To Make You Yawn!
Consider this my one-person mission to get the entire world to yawn (...or at least all 10,000 or so of you reading this website right now!)
Go ahead...
Try & fight it.
But before you finish this article you'll yawn.
Guaranteed.
Try To Not Yawn...
I Dare You!
Usually, just thinking (or reading) about yawning will make you yawn.
And when the person next to you yawns, forget about it... you'll yawn too.

Flickr photos that capture yawns...
It's widely assumed that yawning occurs because we are tired or bored or because we see someone else doing it, but there isn't any hard evidence to support these beliefs. The most plausible explanation, and the one that is taught in medical school, is that we yawn because oxygen levels in our lungs are low. Source
But even this has been disputed...
Try & fight the yawn #2:
- We know it's involuntary because we do it even before we are born. Research shows that 11-week-old fetuses yawn.
- Yawns become contagious to people between the first and second years of life.
- When one person in a group yawns, over half of the people in the group will yawn within 5 minutes, and the rest will at least be tempted to yawn.
- Even animals yawn when they see another animal yawn.
- Yawns in male students had a longer duration than those in female students.
- The average duration of a yawn is about 6 seconds.

Hmmm... Your theory is interesting. But I'm not sure it's worthy of a yawn.
I'm just sayin... the barometric pressure must be completely out of control here in my office, because I keep yawning when I'm just READING about yawning!
I will give you this though... I never realized that when my ears pop (on a car ride, for instance) I have a tendancy to yawn. I mean, I knew that I had a tendancy to "un-pop" my ears, but I've never paid close enough attention to whether or not I YAWN to un-pop them.
However, coming home from work today, I took the scenic route -- which takes me up and down a huge Tennessee mountain ;o) -- and, lo and behold, I found myself automatically yawning to clear my ears.
I have my own little theory on why people yawn. It's pretty simple really. When you take a drive through the mountains and as you are descending you will usually need to yawn to "pop" your eardrums. That's due to a drop in barometric pressure due to your altitude drop. Weather is all about barometric pressure. When the barometric pressure drops ever so slightly at any given moment, whether it be at work, home or anywhere else, it causes people to yawn. That's my un-scientific theory and I'm stickin' to it. Who's with me on this??!!
